An introduction to the basic concepts of social and cultural anthropology. Readings emphasize the comparative study of societies at different levels of socio-cultural integration and from different areas of the world. This may include a brief introduction to physical anthropology and archaeology.

Exploration of how shared understandings of the past are created and shaped by oral histories verbalized by marginalized populations. Students investigate how collective memories are fashioned in sites such as museums, family, and community. Students engage in oral history projects and are empowered with historical narrative. We will question why some histories are taught and disseminated while others are silenced.

Margarita Huayhua received a PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan (2010). She is a sociocultural anthropologists and her research and publications engage sociolinguistics, language and identity, ethnography and oral histories. She is currently associate professor of anthropology.
