This two-day colloquium commemorates the centenary of José Saramago (1922-2010), celebrated Portuguese writer and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. In addition to new readings of Saramago’s works and assessments of his legacy by Portuguese and US scholars, the colloquium includes a roundtable reminiscing on hosting Saramago as a distinguished guest and honorary PhD recipient at the University of Massachusetts, as well as a screening of the documentary José and Pilar (2010), followed by a conversation with Pilar del Río, Saramago’s widow and president of the José Saramago Foundation.
