Come celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution with The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives & The Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture

Arguably, women benefited more from the 1974 revolution than any other group in Portuguese society. Yet, few studies of the Portuguese revolution have paid serious attention to the social-movement organizations for women鈥檚 rights that mobilized at the time. In this lecture, Dr. Melo will focus on three such organizations: the Movimento de Liberta莽茫o da Mulher, the Movimento Democr谩tico da Mulher, and the Uni茫o de Mulheres Antifascistas e Revolucion谩rias, identifying the objectives of each, pointing out their allies, and analyzing the reasons why they perceived each other as competitors rather than potential allies in the cause for women鈥檚 rights in post-revolutionary Portugal.
