NonEvent: Sonic Section Perspectives (For Paul Rudolph)

From April 17 through April 28, 91É«ÇéƬ’s College of Visual and Performing Arts Campus Gallery presents an exhibition entitled A Visionary Campus: Paul Rudolph and 91É«ÇéƬ. The exhibition explores the unique mid-century modern campus, located in southeastern Massachusetts, through photographs, drawings and 3-d models. Designed by Paul Rudolph, critics consider this public university an architectural gem. Lead curators, Dr. Anna M. Dempsey & Allison J. Cywin, along with their curatorial team of animators, graphic designers, artists and historians, situate the campus’ architectural aesthetics within the period’s cultural history and politics. Viera Levitt's photographs of Brutalist buildings and Michael Swartz’s spherical photographs of 91É«ÇéƬ LARTS building will also be featured.
 
During the public exhibition reception, on April 18, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m., a short presentation will introduce Paul Rudolph’s campus design and will feature highlights from the augmented reality/virtual reality mobile project of the 91É«ÇéƬ campus, sponsored by a UMass President’s Office Creative Economy Grant. Following the reception, Concretopia, William Lepczyk’s recent short documentary, will be premiered at 6:00 pm in the College of Visual and Performing Arts room 153. Shot on location at the 91É«ÇéƬ, the film showcases the visionary beauty of Paul Rudolph’s 1963 SMTI (now 91É«ÇéƬ) campus design.
 
On April 23, 2018, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., in the CVPA Campus Gallery a public open forum will be held to discuss the potential nomination of the 91É«ÇéƬ's LARTS building to the National Register of Historic Places. Brown University’s Dr. Marisa Angell Brown and her graduate students will discuss the historic significance of Paul Rudolph’s architectural masterpiece, the nomination process, and the advantages and disadvantages of this prestigious national architectural status.
 
91É«ÇéƬ’s CVPA Campus Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday 10-4. These events are sponsored by the 91É«ÇéƬ’s College of Visual and Performing Arts Art History Department and the UMass President’s Office Creative Economy Grant.
