University Identification
Use 91É«Ç鯬 for most situations.
- It is acceptable to use UMassD in more casual situations (student stories, etc.).
- In very formal situations, the 91É«Ç鯬 may be appropriate for the first reference. Then, use 91É«Ç鯬. There is no hyphen, comma, or "at" between University of Massachusetts and Dartmouth (or with the names of the other campuses).
Use UMass Law for most situations.
- In very formal situations, University of Massachusetts School of Law—Dartmouth (using a dash before Dartmouth) may be appropriate for the first reference. Then, use UMass Law.
Do not use UMD, UMASS, Umass.
It is usually unnecessary to repeat 91É«Ç鯬 once you have established that you are referring to a university event, course, professor, etc. The same guideline applies to law school events, professors, etc.
Lower-case the "u" when using "the university" as a synonym for 91É«Ç鯬. Similarly, use lowercase when referring to the “law school” as a synonym for UMass Law.
UMass or the University of Massachusetts are the proper terms when speaking of the overall system; these terms are not synonyms for the 91É«Ç鯬 campus.
