Coaching Tips for Incoming Students
- Give your student the opportunity to develop autonomy and independence.
- Encourage your student to initiate contact and communication during the school week, Monday through Friday.
- Consider using weekends as a time to check in and reconnect.
- Offer encouragement and emotional support if your student is missing the comforts of home, family, and familiar routines.
- Try not to overwhelm your student with too many questions. Allow them to guide the conversation and share at their own pace.
- Remind your student of the importance of self-care, including sleep, nutrition, exercise, and balance, as these habits support academic success and overall well-being.
- If your student shares disappointment about an assignment, exam, or other challenge, ask what they need from you in that moment. Sometimes students simply want to vent and feel heard; other times they may want help brainstorming solutions or next steps.
- Let your student know that you trust their judgment and are confident in their ability to make decisions and navigate challenges independently.
